Smokers Are at a Much Higher Risk of Esophageal and Oral Cavity Cancers Than Non-Smokers

Northern Star Company would like to share with our employees the harmful effects of smoking. Non-smokers significantly reduce their risk of developing conditions such as cataracts, osteoporosis, psoriasis, vein inflammation and blockage, hypertension, heart attack, stroke, and reproductive system diseases. On a community-wide scale, 90% of lung cancer cases and 75% of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) cases occur in smokers.

From an economic perspective, saving 10,000 VND per day by not purchasing cigarettes amounts to 3,600,000 VND annually. The savings increase significantly for those who buy more expensive cigarettes.

Globally, 600,000 people die every year from secondhand smoke exposure, of whom 64% are women. These are individuals who inhale cigarette smoke from others.

Children, in particular, are more vulnerable to the harmful chemicals in cigarettes due to their underdeveloped lungs. They face risks such as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), low birth weight, respiratory infections, middle ear infections, and asthma symptoms.

Let’s work together to protect ourselves and our loved ones by understanding and acting against the dangers of smoking.

So, what should be done to reduce the harmful effects of tobacco? If you are a smoker: Try to quit smoking. While you have not quit smoking, do not smoke indoors, do not smoke near women, children, or the elderly. When in public places, strictly follow the regulations prohibiting smoking in medical, educational, care, nurturing, and entertainment facilities for children; indoor areas of workplaces, train stations, bus stations, bus shelters, in restaurants, on cars, and other public places as prescribed in the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention.

The Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention was passed by the National Assembly on June 18, 2012 and took effect from May 1, 2013. It strictly prohibits the following acts: Manufacturing, trading, importing, storing, transporting counterfeit and smuggled cigarettes; Advertising and promoting cigarettes; Direct marketing of cigarettes to consumers in any form; People under 18 years old use, buy, sell tobacco; Sell, supply tobacco to people under 18 years old, etc. If violated, they will be punished according to the Government's decrees. However, currently, violations related to tobacco have not been strictly handled. Mr. Nguyen Hong Thanh - Deputy Director of Binh Thuan Health Education and Communication Center, said: "The Department of Health Inspectorate has conducted inspections at medical facilities in the area and found that the majority of staff and civil servants comply with regulations on tobacco harm prevention. However, it is very difficult for patients and their families to change their behavior. Although there have been reminders and penalties, they have not been implemented. This is a long-term task."

Therefore, smokers' awareness of the harmful effects of tobacco on themselves and those around them is still the most important. To successfully quit smoking, smokers need to have a clear motivation to quit smoking; understand the methods of quitting; Recognize the discomfort that will come in the early stages of quitting smoking and how to cope with it; Choose the time to start quitting and, importantly, don't give up. Experts also say: There is no such thing as "failure" in quitting smoking, but only the concept of "unsuccessful" quitting smoking. Up to 90% of people who quit smoking relapse. Therefore, it takes 5-6 times to quit smoking successfully. Quitting smoking is successful when the quitting time is at least 12 months, not when you no longer crave cigarettes. It takes 30-40 years to change the non-smoking behavior of Vietnamese people. Therefore, implementing only 1% of tobacco harm prevention measures is also very necessary. Therefore, through this training session, it will help equip basic skills for officials participating in tobacco harm prevention activities as well as increase awareness of compliance with the Law on Tobacco Harm Prevention, contributing to protecting a healthy living environment.
